Tracey Smith on Educating the Brain
Of course Tracey was not having a go at anyone – it was just a co-incidence that she spoke of Alzheimer’s at our Rotary meeting last week!
We pride ourselves in having timely guest speakers. Tracey’s talk fitted the bill … perfectly!
Her big word was neuroplasticity – the ability to retrain the brain to offset the ravages of Alzheimer’s.
She spoke of some ideas from Dr Helena Popovic in her book, “In Search of My Father”
Among the 20 Top Tips for educating the brain and regrowing cells and pathways Tracey mentioned:
- Get Attitude – “I can” vs “I can’t” vs “How?”
- Get Sober
- Get Moving
- Get Still – spend some time quietly, just enjoying sights and scenery or listening to the birds and wind
- Get Challenged – explore new routines, routes, tasks, tests, puzzles
- Get Laughing and Smiling – gets the endorphins circulating
- Get adequate sleep, sunshine, and scenery
From the many questions at the end, members are taking seriously the task of fending off the decline.
Thank you Tracey, for sharing these insights with us.
