Australian Children’s Book Week, themed “Reading is Magic”, coincided with our Club’s Presentation of a book to each Grade 4 student at MEC. Library Assistant Leigh Koop warmly welcomed PP Meryl James and PP Alison Teese and the students to the excellent MEC library last Friday. We were joined by Wendy Walsh, Primary Literacy Specialist and Grade 4 students for the story behind our Rotary Club’s interest in encouraging literacy not just in Maryborough and surrounds but also worldwide through Rotary International’s focus on improving literacy and numeracy. The students were each presented with the book that they had chosen from the Rotary book list for Grade 4s. The display of the Australian Children Book Week awards took out interest. We were thanked by two students on behalf of the Grade 4s. Leigh Koop had arranged for Sam from Maryborough Advertiser to attend for the Presentation. On Friday afternoon, Rotarians Bec Lowery and Harold Brietinger, made the presentations to Grade 4 and above students at Avoca PS as guests of Co-Principal Tom Elliott; this is a first for Maryborough Rotary to engage with Avoca PS. We will continue visiting to present books the other schools of St Augustine’s, Timor, Talbot, Carisbrook, Dunolly, Tarnagulla, Amphitheatre, Natte Yallock and Bealiba.
