This year's Rotary Zone 8 Institute was held in Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. Current, future and past District Governors from Rotary Zone 8 and 7b (Australia, New Guinea, Phillipines and Solomon Islands) attend along with future leaders, Rotary Foundation District chairs and other invited Rotarians to get a report of how Rotary is doing in our area, to train for roles, and to listen to stimulating speakers. Around four to five hundred people attended this year and they heard some fantastic speakers including John Germ (the incoming RI President for 2016-2017 from the U.S.A.), Australia's Ian Riseley (the RI President in 2017-2018), Tom Gleisner (writer, producer and actor in films such as The Castle and the Dish, and television shows such as Utopia, Frontline, and The Panel), Marcus Akuhata-Brown from New Zealand (very funny and endearing), RI Director Jennifer Jones (a very stimulating speaker), Innovative surgeon, Professor Jeffrey Rosenfeld, Kate Carnell the CEO of Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and at least half a dozen others. Entertainment was provided by Mike Brady who wrote and performed "Up There Cazaley", Colleen Hewett and the Melbourne Gospel Choir. We heard about many of the new ideas being discussed in Rotary circles such as allowing clubs to determine how often they meet and other ideas too radical to mention here. Apart from PDG Geoff and Meryl, our members Anthony Ohlsen and Garry Higgins attended to look after a District 9780 Pop Up Stand and fly the flag for our Family Violence program. All in all, it was an exciting week-end of Rotary. One great bit of news is that as from next year (in September), ALL Rotarians will be invited to attend.
