Information Communication Technology ...developments and consequences.

This talk discussed the developments in computer technology as witnessed by speaker, Brian. He talked briefly of the areas of hardware development to the fantastic speeds, capacities and power we have today, also, automatic data capture from MICR , Bar code , OCR, and digitising of photos and videos and movement.
Many forces pushed the development of networking including the SWIFT ( Society for Interchange of Financial Transactions) and major corporations but ARPA ( Advanced Research Projects Authority) really developed the Protocol which when adopted allowed all networks to communicate and became the Internet standard we have today.
The advent of Fibre optic cables increased transmission rates , when laid under sea and overland these have enabled our mass worldwide communication.
Corporations such as Boeing fostered and pushed computing development so that today designers design products on line from terminals around the world using sophisticated CAD systems and developed in computer assembly followed by robot assembly.
These developments now mean that organisations can use the technology to place their manufacturing, financial, management, medical and accounting operations wherever is best suited to their strategy and still maintain communication and control.
The personal use of these facilities, including the pushing of digital TV and the flow of TV through free to air and the internet ,has had huge social implications for individuals, family and communities. It also remains to be seen whether or not we can
