Frances Clarke

At last weeks meeting we had the pleasure of having Frances Clarke from Goldfields Employment and Learning Centre come to our meeting to speak to us on the changes at the Centre. Frances explained how the cafe was lost due to the unsustainable losses it was making and thatthe Green Army finished because they did not receive the funding to keep it going, even though they were so successful with the program. There was no money for the "host" which GELC was for the program. But with the funding rules, they did not qualify to run it again. Now the only places it is being run are too far for the members of our community.

Adult and youth literacy were discussed including the impact poor literacy has on job applications and the success or failure of applicants. Amongst the effects this has on the community is the need for some applicants to have their driving licence, which is hindered by their literacy levels, a vicious circle. The members asked loads of questions and answers were readily given.

Frances  ended by saying, "It takes a village to raise a child"
